Galaxy luminosity evolution: how much is due to a model choice? Abstract. The cluster and field luminosity functions (LFs) determined on large homogeneous samples (N > 2200 galaxies each) are almost indistinguishable, down to M * + 4 in the r and i filters, hence suggesting that the effect of the cluster environment on the galaxy properties does not affect the galaxy luminosity function in red bands. The similarity of the red band LFs in different environments suggests that the galaxy mass function is preserved during the galaxy infall in the cluster. By analyzing a large sample of galaxies in clusters, ideal from many points of view (multicolor data, large size, many clusters, metric magnitudes) we found that luminosity evolution is required by the data but the latter do not unambiguously derive its flavour if a differential luminosity evolution between bright and faint galaxies is allowed. We show that the LF parameters (slope, characteristic magnitude and their evolution) and errors depend on assumptions in a way seldom recognized in literature. We also point out logical inconsistencies between hypothesis assumed in deriving literature LF and presented results, suggesting caution in interpreting similar published results.

An Empirically Based Model for Predicting Infrared Luminosity Functions, Deep Infrared Galaxy Counts and the Diffuse Infrared Background
We predict luminosity functions and number counts for extragalactic infrared sources at various wavelengths using the framework of our empirically based model. Comparisons of our galaxy count results with existing data indicate that either galaxy luminosity evolution is not much stronger than Q = 3.1, where L ∝ (1+z), or that this evolution does not continue beyond a redshift of 2. However, a d...
متن کاملThe X-ray luminosity function of galaxies and its evolution
We compile one of the largest ever samples to probe the X-ray normal galaxy luminosity function and its evolution with cosmic time. In particular, we select 207 galaxies (106 late and 101 early-type systems) from the Chandra Deep Field North and South surveys, the Extended Chandra Deep Field South and the XBOOTES survey. We derive the luminosity function separately for the total (early+late), t...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
متن کاملThe Mass and Luminosity Functions of Galaxies and their Evolution
We set up a model for the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function, taking advantage of recent work that brought in some better understanding of the mass function for gravitationally condensed objects. We add to this a simple model of star formation that reproduces the behaviour of the Tully-Fisher relation, in order to attach a luminosity to a massive halo with a given velocity dispersion. ...
متن کاملModelling the Deep Counts: Luminosity Evolution, Dust and Faint Galaxies
In this paper we analyse the deep number counts problem, taking account of new observational and theoretical developments. First we show that the new Bruzual and Charlot(1993) models allow a new class of spiral dominated luminosity evolution (LE) model where signiicant amounts of the luminosity evolution needed to t faint count data are due to spiral rather than early-type galaxies. Second we s...
